Read more »

“Understanding Social Change: Technology as the Cybernetic Organization in Relation to Society, Culture, and Communication”A research on theoretical models explaining the relation between technology and increasing mediality of social life15.-17.3.2009: King Saudi University Riyadh, SaudiarabienContribution to the conference “Communication Technology and Social Change: Communication Technologies & Social Change”What I contributed to the Conference:* A research-leading theoretical frame work, that is developed with responsibility to epistemologically pre-settings and that is focused and dedicated to cultural studies as a theoretical framework, which* develops structures of scientific thinking in respect to the notion, that observing cultures of communication/media/media technology starts with observing and reflecting the cultures of thinking on communication, media and media technology.* There should also be a point of social (ethical, cultural) responsibility: what is the frame of execution? In that relation research on communication/media always is a contribution to the learning process of the (a) society. In order to explain the sustainable impact of technology in culture, education and society it is epistemologically necessary to shape out a theoretical interpretation of the cultural and social implication of the technologically supported economy and of the economically driven technology: Cybernetics can be such a model of knowledge.1. Culture of Technology: the cultural meaning of technology.Social change, a theoretical model of social development, based on theory of modernity (A. Giddens), is a metaphor for the description of alteration of social structures (roles, relations, positions, functions, privileges etc.) with connection to other system developments, such as economy, technology and science, has to be taken as a model of knowledge minimizing uncertainty and reduzing complexity. In that anthropological program technology and education meet each other as factors of enlightenment, both in their own method. As culture (as the contextual background of the interpretation of - sense of – life, manifested in social structures and depicted in common mind, habit and behaviour) is the programmatic background of technological development, technology (especially communication technology) provides the society with models of sociability. Technology and culture drive each another with interpretations of sociability of life and in that circulation new models of organization of society are emerging.2. Mediality: the social environment in media society. The role of media in that circulating process is increasingly decisive. Media are structural figures / cultural measures in both worlds, in technological and in cultural ones. Technology is the frame for creativity of media, culture is the meaningful environment of mediality and discoursivity (mediatization). Researching on the relationship of technology and society in relation to media makes thinking about the position of the user as the reference point t of competency. Since the question is not, what media does with users, but what users do with media, the model of theory that has to be researched on is not the media, but mediality: The usage of media is culturally structured and is, what gives sense (usablity) and demands sense (aesthetics, ethics) when getting connected to the societal discourse.3. Media Literacy : a cultural good.Research on media literacy has to be oriented on and directed to a theoretical concept of mediality under conditions of what media society stands for; and it has be enhanced in respect to cultural theories of media society for the development of everyday media practice (mediality as a model of social practice). Media literacy in that theoretical context is not a personal competence (advantage, privilege), but has to be developed as a cultural good of/for a society, since it has to do with cultural identity, social cohesion, sustainability of social values and so on.Download Full Paper
